As a major winter storm descends on Texas, crypto miners are powering down operations to help ease the burden on the state’s already beleaguered power grid. Riot Blockchain has already shut down 99% of its operations at its Texas mine.

Industry sources said the ice storm is completely different from the Texas ice storm in early 2021, with electricity prices temporarily only rising to 7-9 cents, compared to $9 at one point in early 2021. The industry expects to return to normal in the second week of February.

The cryptocurrency community has been discussing a newly announced bitcoin miner called the Numiner NM440 that claims to produce speeds of up to 440 terahash per second (TH/s). Furthermore, a publicly-listed company called Sphere 3D has detailed that it purchased 60,000 Numiner NM440 mining rigs and aims to deploy 32 exahash per second (EH/s) of SHA256 hashpower. Furthermore, there’s been some disbelief among members of the crypto community on whether or not the hashrate speed claims are legitimate. It should be noted that this news has the possibility of collusion with the listed company to boost the share price, and its performance indicators, chip capacity, supply chain and other information is in doubt.

Despite the nearly six-month low in bitcoin prices this month, bitcoin's network-wide computing power has continued to soar, setting new records and now approaching 200 EH/s. Samir Tabar, chief strategy officer at bitcoin miner Bit Digital, said that the more computing power used to maintain the network, the more secure the bitcoin network will be and the more transactions it will be able to process. Peter Wall, CEO of crypto miner Argo Blockchain, said that even with recent events such as the political unrest in Kazakhstan that disrupted BTC's count, the count will continue to grow every month going forward.

The government of Argentina has eliminated the subsidies that applied to power used by cryptocurrency miners. This is the decision that the Energy Secretary of the country took regarding cryptocurrency mining, and according to the new 40/2022 resolution, published and made official on February 1st, miners will now pay almost four times what they did before.

The reason behind the change is explained in the resolution, which declares : ”Due to the availability of payment and the profitability of the activity, it is considered opportune that these users face the payment of the price of energy equivalent to the cost of supply, being inequitable that they pay the price of a residential user or another.”

Privately held miner Merkle Standard will be one of the first crypto miners in the U.S. to get Bitmain’s newest mining rig, the S19 Pro+ Hydro, which uses liquid cooling technology. The new cooling technology can reduce heat, power consumption and noise, as well as extend the lifespan of the machines.

Merkle has signed a deal with Bitmain, one of the world’s largest bitcoin mining rig manufacturers, to get a shipment of 4,449 of the newest mining computers in May, and expects the machines to add about 840 petahash per second (PH/s) of mining power to the company.

Merkle will deploy all the Bitmain miners at its flagship data center in Eastern Washington, which has 225 megawatt (MW) capacity, with potential expansion capabilities up to 500 MW. The industry organization of Russian energy suppliers has come up with ideas on how to combat cryptocurrency mining in homes, basements and garages. The association believes the phenomenon is the main issue with mining in Russia as authorities prepare to legalize it.

The Russian association of energy suppliers and power utilities has prepared proposals to curb amateur crypto mining with subsidized household electricity. It wants consumers to indicate the intended use of the electricity they purchase and in case of deviation from the stated purpose, such customers to be disconnected from the power grid.

The organization also insists to oblige internet providers to share the IP addresses of suspected crypto miners with power utilities. It calls for introducing legal liability for violations such as denying inspectors access to electrical installations powering cryptocurrency farms and the use of electricity for non-household purposes.
